This is a limited, one hundred copies, collector’s edition of this first 1/3 vinyl sets including three high quality 180 gram 12″ records of the first two hours of Guillermo Galindo’s multi-channel sound installation Sonic Borders. Lasting a total of 4 hours and 20 minutes total, this 8 channel immersive sound installation has traveled through museums around the US as part of the binational exhibit and collaboration Border Cantos by photographer Richard Misrach and experimental composer Guillermo Galindo thanks to the Crystal Bridges/ Art Bridges initiative. The composition was created using sonic devices made from from immigrant’s belongings and border patrol objects found near the US/Mexico border. The piece was originally designed to showcase 8 different sonic devices spatially located within the space of a museum gallery. Each of the sonic devices is located in a specific gallery space where it plays its own sound from that particular location. Through 4 hours and 20 minutes, the composition combines dialogues between duos, trios quartets, quintets, sextets septets and octets from different locations in the gallery. The composition was written based on time transitions derived from the 260 days Aztec/Mayan calendar of Venus which has weeks of 13 days and months of 20 days (13 times 20 equals a total of 260 days). Sonic Borders allows the audience the opportunity to listen to something different every gallery visit depending on the time frame and location of their choice. The cover of the vinyl set includes a photograph of Richard Misrach which was converted into a graphic score through an intervention by Guillermo Galindo. The inside cover contains a detailed reproduction of the original score map. And the back cover includes an exclusive essay written by Mac Arthur fellow Josh Kun.
